Beginning with the 2003 STS Meetings in Dallas, Texas the IHHA Board of Directors adopted a “Best Paper” Award to recognize the outstanding presentations made during the conference. The selection process for IHHA papers is, in itself, a critical procedure which results in very good state-of-the-art presentations that address problems associated with heavy haul issues. However, the board wishes to recognize those papers which are judged to be of the highest value and offer exceptional insight in the subject of the presentation. The Best Paper Awards were divided into four categories based on the conference structure as follows: - Rolling Stock Technology
- Vehicle/Track Interaction
- Infrastructure Technology
- Reliability and Network Efficiency
The winners were: Rolling Stock Technology -----“Integrated Wayside Systems to Improve Safety and Efficiency” Authors ----- William G. Blevins, Canadian National Railway, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Richard Morgan and Chris Pinney, Transportation Technology Center, Inc., Pueblo, Colorado USA Vehicle/Track Interaction ---- “Performance-based Track Geometry Assessment for Network Efficiency” Authors ----- Dingqing Li, Thomas Guins and Semih Kalay of the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., Pueblo, Colorado USA Infrastructure Technology ----- “Adapting Track Maintenance Practices for Heavy Haul on Norfolk Southern” Authors ---- Randy L. Bowman, Robert W. Blank, and Timothy Drake, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, USA Reliability and Network Efficiency ---- “A System for Long Haul Optimal Driver Advice” Author ----- Dale Coleman, TMG Rail Technology PTY Limited, Australia The authors of the “Best Papers” were recognized at the Closing Session and each principal author received an engraved pewter plate, a complimentary copy of the IHHA Best Practice manual, and free admission to the next IHHA Conference in Rio, Brazil in 2005.
