Emerging Professionals Award
The IHHA is pleased to continue this year its support of young and emerging rail professionals with its Emerging Rail Professional Award.
This award acknowledges and rewards two professionals early in their rail careers who have made a contribution towards improving the rail industry in the areas of engineering, safety, or operations.
The two finalists will receive:
Complimentary entry into the 2019 IHHA STS conference which includes the main conference, gala dinner, technical tour.
Paid travel, accommodation, and visa costs from their country of origin to the conference in Narvik, Norway.
Entry Process for 2019
Write a paper on a technical topic within the freight heavy haul railway industry proposing a new solution to an existing or a potential problem. The papers should be 2500 words or less. If graphics are included, each graphic will count for 500 words of the 2500 word total.
The issue discussed in the paper should have an impact on the freight heavy haul railway industry. In your proposal, describe the problem and its current or future impact; demonstrate how the problem can be addressed and how the solution will result into an improvement in one or more of the following areas: Vehicle Track Systems, Track, Bridges & Tunnels, Operations, Rolling Stock, Motive Power, Traction and Energy Efficiency, Extreme Conditions, Human factors. Papers submitted to the IHHA Conference proceedings may be also submitted for consideration if the principal submitting author meets all the above criteria.
Deadline of Submission of the paper: March 31, 2019

The top two finalists will be notified of their selection by April 15, 2019, the award winner will be chosen by the audience following a 10 presentation at the conference.
Selection Criteria and PROCESS
The paper will be judged against seven criteria:
Does the paper address an existing or potential problem for freight heavy haul in Vehicle Track Systems, Track, Bridges & Tunnels, Operations, Rolling Stock, Motive Power, Traction and Energy Efficiency, Extreme Conditions, Human factors?
Is this a new solution or one that is known?
Does the paper address show proper linkage between the problem and the proposed solution?
Cost benefit analysis included
Potential for and ease of implementation
Does the paper meet the 2500 word or less criteria (with each graphic counting as 500 words)?
Evaluating each paper will be a sub-committee of the IHHA which has been set up to review the submissions and select the two finalists. All submissions should be send to the committee secretary, Lisa Stabler (email@example.com), who will review and shortlist the papers. Once the shortlist has been made, and the finalists chosen, they will be notified by April 15th.
The two finalists will be given 10 minutes each to present their papers at the conference during the Opening Ceremony, June 12th, 2019 and thru audience participation, the winner will be chosen.
A decision will then be made on who the winner is and an announcement will be at the Gala Dinner.
Applicants applying for the award must:
Have a university degree or the equivalent.
Currently be working within the railway industry.
Not have more than 5 years of work experience after graduating.
Note – does not include work experience gained prior to graduation
Not be more than 35 years of age at the date of the conference.
