The International Heavy Haul Association (IHHA) has announced a leadership transition, marking the retirement of longtime Chief Executive Officer Scott Lovelace and the appointment of Antonio Merheb as the Association’s new CEO. The change becomes effective on March 11, 2026.
Lovelace has played a central role in IHHA’s development over the years, contributing to the strengthening of its technical programs, expanding global collaboration, and reinforcing the Association’s commitment to advancing safe, efficient, and innovative heavy haul railway operations. Under his leadership, IHHA further consolidated its position as a key platform for knowledge exchange and industry engagement.
The IHHA Board of Directors expressed its appreciation for Lovelace’s contributions, highlighting his role in the successful delivery of international conferences, technical initiatives, and member engagement efforts.
“With gratitude and respect, we thank Scott for his remarkable service,” said Kari Gonzales, President and CEO of MxV Rail and Chairperson of IHHA. “His dedication to IHHA and to the heavy haul industry worldwide has left a lasting legacy.”
Following a unanimous decision by the Board, Antonio Merheb has been appointed as the new CEO. A long-standing member of the IHHA leadership, Merheb brings more than a decade of experience in railway engineering, with a focus on heavy haul operations. He currently serves as a consultant at MRS Logística, where he has worked for the past 12 years.
Merheb holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc in transportation infrastructure and civil engineering, and has conducted research in both the United States and Brazil. His background combines technical expertise, academic experience, and international perspective.
“We are pleased to welcome Antonio into the CEO role,” Gonzales added. “His deep technical expertise, global perspective, and long-standing commitment to IHHA’s mission position him well to guide the Association into its next chapter.”
As IHHA continues to advance its agenda through conferences, workshops, and strategic initiatives, Merheb will work closely with the Board, members, and industry partners to further strengthen innovation, safety, and collaboration across the global heavy haul sector.
Commenting on his appointment, Merheb emphasized the importance of continuity and progress.
“I am honored to lead IHHA at this pivotal time,” he said. “Together, we will continue to foster innovation, enhance global collaboration, and ensure that our industry remains at the forefront of transportation excellence. I look forward to working with our members and partners to build on the Association’s achievements and drive new progress in the years ahead.”
